Hot Point #5: Find your Direction
Often, the direction in which you burn your lines or shading makes a difference. Why? This is because the pen metal is hotter while in the air but once it is in contact with the cooler surface, the pen temperature drops. You need to use this knowledge to your advantage.
When you start a line using a Writer or Skew category* pen, the start of the line is darker and sometimes wider than the end of the line. Therefore, when you are creating hair, fur, and whiskers, it makes sense to start the line on the body and pull the line off the body so that the line is thinner the further away from its root on the body. Make sure to turn your artwork so that the stroke is natural for your hand. When creating a graduating tone that fades while using a pen in the Shader category*, start the tone where it is darker and pull the pen towards the lighter tone.
Direction also makes a difference when using Shader pens to burn tones inside a shape. My recommendation is to turn your artwork to position your Shader inside the shape and place the toe/tip of the Shader up to the line, if you are starting the tone at the line.
This allows you to see precisely where you are burning in relation to the line. If instead, you burn from the outside of the shape, over the line to the inside of the shape, the pen tip will block your view of the line, as well as allow the heat from the close proximity beneath the tip to overburn onto the wood.
Note: Wood is used as the example here, but this applies to any pyrography medium.

Klingspor’s Woodworking Shop Extravaganza 2024 and the
Woodcarving and Pyrography Show
The 24th Annual Klingspor’s Woodworking Shop Extravaganza was held on Oct 25-26, 2024 at the Metro Hickory Convention Center in Hickory, NC. The turnout of woodworking enthusiasts was very good despite the recent horrific damage from Hurricane Helene.
There were lots of learning opportunities, inspiration, information from the manufacturers, competitions, demonstrations, and a grand prize giveaway. The annual Catawba Valley woodcarving competition was expanded by Southeastern Pyrography Association (SEPA) to include pyrography on different mediums. We had 88 pyrography entries in the show—not bad for our first SEPA sponsored show!
Pyrography categories listed below (in 3 Divisions—Novice, Intermediate, Open) were awarded ribbons for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and Honorable Mention:
-
- Wood (painted and unpainted)
- Leather
- Paper
- Gourds
- Miscellaneous (canvas, cork, bone, tagua nuts, artists conk mushrooms, hats, etc.)
SEPA awarded the following ribbons and cash awards:
• Best of Pyrography Open, Rosette & $150, won by Doug Stainbrook’s Raccoons
• Best of Pyrography Intermediate, Rosette & $100: won by Kelly Wall’s Owls in Tree
• Best of Pyrography Novice, Rosette & $50: won by Cindy Wood’s Barn with Trees
Cindy Wood’s Barn with Trees also won 2nd Best of Novice, Rosette and $50, and Kelly Wall’s Owls in Tree also won 2nd Best of Intermediate, Rosette and $100.
Best of Pyrography - Open
Best of Pyrography – Intermediate
and 2nd Best of Intermediate
Best of Pyrography – Novice
and 2nd Best of Novice
Best of Show Theme - Open
Best of Show Theme – Novice
and 3rd Best of Novice
SEPA had an area next to the Klingspor’s Woodworking Shop’s pyrography booth where SEPA was able to have show attendees try out pyrography. Michele Parsons demonstrated pyrography in the Klingspor booth and Tom Parsons assisted customers with pyrography equipment and supply purchases.
SEPA also had many pieces available for donations to the club , as well as a Silent Auction table with an American flag-eagle burning by Doug Stainbrook and three lamps with pyrography blocks burned by SEPA members and assembled by Joe Davis (SEPA member).
I’d like to share a show woodcarving entry. It is
a gnome pyrographer, complete with a carved
Colwood Super Pro II, a burned sunflower
on an easel, and a burned copy of my book!
How wonderful is that?!

Free Pattern
Free Christmas
Reindeer Pattern
Enjoy this FREE original pattern from Michele Parsons of a Christmas Reindeer. You have permission to use this pattern, in part or in full, to burn and use it royalty-free.
In the shading pattern, the heavy outlines are only meant to show where the transferred lines from the outline pattern are located. To create a more realistic image, avoid burning the transferred pattern lines on the reindeer’s body. For the rest of the design, burn these lines very lightly.
