Description
Crown 3/4" Cryo Roughing Gouge 230K
This tool is recommended for rough shaping of workpieces between center points, but it is unsuitable for bowls.
It has long been understood that subjecting metal tools to elevated temperatures followed by rapid cooling can alter their properties. This transformation occurs because the metal's crystal structure changes, affecting its performance during use.
The two primary crystal types in tool steel are the larger, softer austenite and the smaller, more stable martensite. Heat treatment converts austenite into martensite to produce steel with excellent wear characteristics and a certain degree of ductility.
When combined with high-quality heat treatment, the cryogenic process significantly enhances the transformation of austenite. At extremely low temperatures of -185 °C, fine ‘eta’ carbides form within the carbon structure. These eta carbides grow very slowly and exclusively at these low temperatures, resulting in extremely small particles that fill the spaces between the other crystals in the metal.
The combined effects of cryogenic processing create a refined crystal structure in your hand tool, allowing it to provide a lifetime of service. This process results in a blade that retains its edge longer and offers a superior feel during use.
