Four Properties of a Coated Abrasive
Size CoatThe second layer of adhesive bonding, referred to as the size coat has two main purposes. The first is to tie the individual grains on the abrasive face together, so that they act as a unit instead of as individual grains. The other function of the size coat is to act as a heat shield for the grain. As previously discussed, most of the bonding agents in coated abrasives are phenolic resins, which after curing, are heat resistant.Too much size coat or too little size coat can cause perfo

Advanced Coating Technology | Klingspor's Woodworking Shop
What is ACT on the back of your belts?
Advanced Coating Technology: A proprietary coating technology Klingspor Abrasives applies to improve the properties of coated abrasives. The ACT allows for more grain exposure (Less Resin in the Size Coat & Longer Service Life) better edge wear on belts/discs and more aggression throughout the grit range. When used for wood, ACT prevents the premature clogging of the coated abrasives and significantly increases the service life.

Troubleshooting Common Issues with Abrasives | Klingspor’s Woodworking Shop
Abrasives loading too quickly (issue)
Excessive sanding pressure ("white knuckle syndrome" from pushing down on the sander)
Inadequate or excessive dust extraction (sometimes too much suction on a sander causes it to not
extract dust and work the sander harder)
Excessive speed (Pneumatic Sanders and belts)
Using Closed Coat on Softwoods. Open Coat abrasives for softwoods and closed for hardwoods.

Abrasives 101 | AZ-Plus Alumina Zirconia | Klingspor's Woodworkingshop
Klingspor Abrasives PS36 ( AZ-Plus ) is a stearate coated, semi-open coat Alumina Zirconia on a paper backer. Alumina Zirconia is a tough grain like Aluminum Oxide, but has a property of being hard and brittle like Silicon Carbide called "Friable." This means that when you start with 60 grit, the grain gets under pressure it breaks like an icicle, revealing a fresh new part of the grain that is still 60 grit. From here it slowly wears down like AO making it longer lasting than other ab
